Cuban model and influencer, Maria Carla Ballina discovered the world of fashion through movies of the Golden Age of Hollywood. She strives for the grace, style and elegance of all-time stars while pushing the fashion industry into the future by breaking the stereotypes around models and their ideal looks.

Maria, you grew up in a Cuban-American family. Tell us about yourself, when did you realize you wanted to become a model?
Growing up in a Cuban-American household, I was always captivated by the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood. The timeless beauty and elegance of that era truly inspired me and ignited my love for fashion and the arts. It was through this admiration for old Hollywood that I discovered my passion for modeling. The way the iconic movie stars carried themselves with such grace and poise, the impeccable fashion they wore, it all fascinated me and made me dream of being a part of that world.

What difficulties did you face in your modeling career?
Breaking through the traditional beauty standards that have dominated the industry posed a significant obstacle for me. The fashion industry has long favored a certain look, making it challenging for individuals who don’t fit into those narrow standards. However, I firmly believe that times are changing, and there is an increasing demand for more diverse and inclusive representation. I am determined to push those boundaries, challenge the norms, and show that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities.

What qualities helped you to stand up to the competition?
One quality that has helped me stand up to the competition is my unique style and approach, heavily influenced by my admiration for old Hollywood. I adore incorporating classic elements into my looks, whether it’s a vintage hairstyle, a bold red lip, or an elegant dress. It’s my way of paying homage to the timeless beauty that continues to captivate the world. These elements have become a signature part of my style and have helped me stand out in the industry.

You admire old Hollywood. Let’s talk more about it.
Old Hollywood has always held a special place in my heart. The glamorous movie stars, the impeccable fashion, and the overall elegance of that era are incredibly captivating. I find myself drawn to the timeless beauty and sophistication that was celebrated during that time. Incorporating elements of old Hollywood into my work allows me to pay tribute to the icons who paved the way and continue to inspire me. It’s a way for me to bring a touch of that magical era to the modern world.

You strive to bring a sense of inclusivity and representation to the fashion industry. What does that entail?
As someone who grew up in a culturally rich Cuban-American household, I have been exposed to the beauty of diversity and the importance of inclusivity. It has become my mission to use my platform in the fashion industry to showcase the richness of different ethnicities and backgrounds. I want to break down the barriers and challenge the notion that beauty is limited to a specific look. I believe in celebrating and embracing the diversity that exists in our world and ensuring that everyone feels represented and included in the fashion industry. It means working towards creating a space where people from all backgrounds can see themselves reflected and celebrated.
